A 30-day IELTS Speaking practice plan
The test in brief
- Part 1 (4-5 minutes). Questions about familiar topics: home, work, studies, routines.
- Part 2 (3-4 minutes). A task card, one minute to prepare, then up to two minutes of talking, followed by a question or two.
- Part 3 (4-5 minutes). A discussion of more abstract questions linked to the Part 2 topic.
Examiners rate four things: fluency and coherence, lexical resource (vocabulary), grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. The Speaking test is the same for IELTS Academic and General Training.
The 30-day plan
- Days 1-7 · Part 1 foundations. Talk about your life: home, work, routines, people, food.
- Days 8-14 · Part 2 storytelling. The long turn: journeys, places, decisions, people who shaped you. One minute to prepare, two minutes talking.
- Days 15-28 · Part 3 discussions. Abstract questions and opinions (AI, cities, money, tradition, news) with examiner-style follow-ups.
- Days 29-30 · Exam day. Speaking under pressure and sounding like yourself. Save these two for the final week before your test.
Fifteen extra topics give you more practice in any order.
