A sample class: one Daily Camp, start to finish
1. Listen and read along
The audio plays and each sentence lights up as you hear it. The opening of this camp:
For many travelers, the airport is the most stressful part of a trip. Crowds, long lines, and tight schedules can quickly turn excitement into anxiety. However, with a little knowledge and preparation, you can move through any airport smoothly and even enjoy the experience.
The journey starts before you arrive. Check in online the day before your flight, choose your seat, and download your boarding pass to your phone. Arrive early - usually two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one. This gives you a comfortable buffer if lines are long or you get lost.
2. Learn three words
- Boarding pass - a document that lets you get on a plane. I saved my boarding pass on my phone.
- Buffer - extra time or space to protect against problems. Arriving early gives you a buffer if lines are long.
- Announcement - a public message giving information. Listen for the boarding announcement.
3. Shadow
You record yourself repeating three short passages after the speaker, for example:
Security is where many people lose time. Speed things up by wearing easy shoes, keeping liquids in a clear bag, and removing your laptop before you reach the scanner.
4. Quick check
- What can you do before arriving at the airport to save time?
- How can you speed up airport security?
- Why should you not rely only on announcements?
5. Talk it through
Last, you answer questions about the topic out loud, in your own words: your impressions of the text, the new words in your own sentences, and your own travel stories. This is the step that turns understanding into speaking.
Levels and topics
Camps come in four levels (Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, Advanced) and five kinds of topics: Travel, Daily Life, Work, News and Friends. At Advanced, the same travel theme becomes "The Paradox of Mass Tourism".
