How to practice speaking English every day, in 20 minutes
Why speaking needs its own practice
Many adults understand far more English than they can say. Reading and listening build understanding, but speaking is its own skill: finding words fast, putting them in order, and saying them while someone waits. It only gets easier when you do it out loud, often.
The 20-minute routine
- Listen and read along (5 minutes). One short text at your level, with audio. Follow the words as you hear them.
- Learn three words (3 minutes). Pick three words or phrases you would actually use. Say each one in a sentence about your own life.
- Shadow (5 minutes). Play one sentence, pause, and repeat it with the same rhythm and stress. Then try speaking along with the audio.
- Quick check (2 minutes). Answer a few questions about the text to see what stuck.
- Talk it through (5 minutes). Answer questions about the topic out loud: what you think, what happened to you, what you would do. Record yourself if you can.
Make it a habit
- Practice at the same time every day, right after something you already do, like your morning coffee.
- Count any practice: a club, a call in English, reading aloud. A streak keeps you going.
- Record a one-minute answer on Day 1 and the same question on Day 7. Small changes are easy to hear side by side.
Research backs this up: a new daily habit took a median of 66 days to feel automatic, and missing one day did not materially affect it (Lally et al., 2010). Shadowing has also been linked to better pronunciation and fluency, for example in a 10-week study with 42 university students (Hsu, Journal of Computers in Education). More research and sources.
Add real conversation once a week
Solo practice builds your words. A group builds your nerve. A weekly club with a set topic means you always know what to talk about, and other people expect you there. Here's how an online speaking club works.
How SpeakingCamps does it
The SpeakingCamps Daily Camp is this routine, ready-made: a fresh topic at your level every day, audio that lights up as you listen, three words, shadowing, a quick check and a talk-through. See a sample class or try a free camp.
Questions
Can I practice speaking English alone?
Yes. Shadowing, answering questions out loud and recording yourself all work on your own. Add a weekly club or a conversation partner to practice reacting to real people.
What is shadowing?
You listen to a short sentence and repeat it right away, copying the rhythm, stress and intonation. It trains your mouth and ear together, and it makes natural phrases feel easy to say.
How long until I notice a difference?
It depends on your level and how often you practice. A Day 1 and Day 7 recording of the same question makes the change easy to hear.
